There are few things more frustrating than having video evidence, but its image quality is too poor to positively identify faces and license plates. In short, if you can make do without a camera that covers your vehicle’s back and without frills like a phone app, this is good value.ĪPEMAN C420 Mini dash cam footage (day/night): Footage taken at night is noticeably fuzzier than what daytime conditions allow, but you should still be able to make out license plates without squinting, especially in the area covered by your headlights. The screen is small but very clear, and the picture quality is everything you’d expect from this resolution. As with the C860, the C420 can be used in parking mode with or without a hardwired power source. The primary image sensor is not quite as good as the C860’s, but also utilizes wide dynamic range technology for clear pictures even under challenging lighting conditions. This compact form factor blends in with the rearview mirror, making the dashcam very difficult to detect at a glance from outside. Though its resolution is significantly lower at 1080p, it still offers decent picture quality, albeit in a tiny package. The Mini shares most of the good features of its sibling, but without a rear-facing camera and at about half the price. It’s very much the younger brother of the Apeman C860 Dual Dash Cam: a product of the same design philosophy. This bite-sized camera is just about the smallest you can find that still leaves room for a screen.
